13 AGCE Summer Research: Unit 15

13 AGCE Unit 15: Summer Homework

Unit 15, which you will begin in September is all about Graphic Design – and will concentrate primarily on graphic design techniques that centre around:

Typography (letters and the forms and styles they take)
Photography
Illustration (anything from traditionally drawn images to computer generated images).

This year you will be working in A4 sketchbooks, which have been ordered. For your homework I would like you to generate 3 double page spreads that you will be able to stick into the front of these books in September (so six A4 pages in total – in three sets of two)

Don’t panic.

• For your first set – I want you to find interesting examples of typography. Where have letters been used creatively and effectively. For example – would the font used on a horror film poster (perhaps a stylised image dripping with blood or slime) differ from that used on a cereal box. Find what you think are good examples. You can stick pages directly onto the page – or even better – build up a collection of photos (a walk around Westfield would generate hundreds of images. Write a little about each example. Why has the designer chosen this font? What does it ‘signify’ to you? Is it modern, traditional, B&W, colour?
• Set two – exactly the same thing – but uses of photography in graphic design. Think about music album covers? Magazine Ads. Food packaging. Has the image been photographed to produce a feeling of drama or calm? Has it been altered digitally? Have the colours been altered? Why do you think this is?
• Set three – Illustration. From children’s books to newspaper and magazine articles. Look at the amount of illustration out there. Traditional, digital or a mixture of the two. How is it used. What does is ‘say’ or describe? Why do you like it?

You will find that many of the areas you are being asked to look at ‘cross over’ and work together. For example – a CD cover might feature all three elements (typography, photos and illustration). This is fine – but go with whatever you feel is the strongest element for any given page. If the lettering is the stand-out element for you – add it to the typography page.

I have sent all 13 AGCE students a more comprehensive version of this post to their Chellaston School Email accounts (with a list of do's, dont's and useful links).

If for some reason you can't pick this up - email me via aaronrobinson@chellaston.derby.sch.uk and I'll send it to your preferred address.

Nearly a month still left of the holls!!! Hope you're all enjoying the sun (lol)

Mr Robinson.
