13 AGCE Summer Research: Unit 15

13 AGCE Unit 15: Summer Homework

Unit 15, which you will begin in September is all about Graphic Design – and will concentrate primarily on graphic design techniques that centre around:

• Typography (letters and the forms and styles they take)
• Photography
• Illustration (anything from traditionally drawn images to computer generated images).

This year you will be working in A4 sketchbooks, which have been ordered. For your homework I would like you to generate 3 double page spreads that you will be able to stick into the front of these books in September (so six A4 pages in total – in three sets of two)

Don’t panic.

• For your first set – I want you to find interesting examples of typography. Where have letters been used creatively and effectively. For example – would the font used on a horror film poster (perhaps a stylised image dripping with blood or slime) differ from that used on a cereal box. Find what you think are good examples. You can stick pages directly onto the page – or even better – build up a collection of photos (a walk around Westfield would generate hundreds of images. Write a little about each example. Why has the designer chosen this font? What does it ‘signify’ to you? Is it modern, traditional, B&W, colour?
• Set two – exactly the same thing – but uses of photography in graphic design. Think about music album covers? Magazine Ads. Food packaging. Has the image been photographed to produce a feeling of drama or calm? Has it been altered digitally? Have the colours been altered? Why do you think this is?
• Set three – Illustration. From children’s books to newspaper and magazine articles. Look at the amount of illustration out there. Traditional, digital or a mixture of the two. How is it used. What does is ‘say’ or describe? Why do you like it?

You will find that many of the areas you are being asked to look at ‘cross over’ and work together. For example – a CD cover might feature all three elements (typography, photos and illustration). This is fine – but go with whatever you feel is the strongest element for any given page. If the lettering is the stand-out element for you – add it to the typography page.

I have sent all 13 AGCE students a more comprehensive version of this post to their Chellaston School Email accounts (with a list of do's, dont's and useful links).

If for some reason you can't pick this up - email me via aaronrobinson@chellaston.derby.sch.uk and I'll send it to your preferred address.

Nearly a month still left of the holls!!! Hope you're all enjoying the sun (lol)

Mr Robinson.

YEAR 11, 12 AND 13 - LAST MINUTE CHECKS

Well done you lot - we finally made it and the exam days will shortly be here. Over the Easter holiday you can do a check list to make sure that everything is in place.
Remember, marks are awarded for:
  • Studies from direct observation
  • Artist connections
  • Planning
  • Final piece.

If anything is missing get it done! All these sections carry loads of marks.

The Art Department will be open on Wednesday, April 15th (the 2nd Wednesday during the holiday) between 9.00 am and 12.00 am just in case you need to come in and make final preparations.

Have you drawn out your final piece? Do you need to prepare the background?

Our A-level students are reminded to mount all their work ready for the final assessment. Good luck with this - I am sure you will make an excellent job. Remember to include some of your photographs as part of planning. Crop your written work into smaller, paragraph size, sections.

Contact me if you need to - rogercharles@chellaston.derby.sch.uk

Have a great holiday. Chill. Get all the art work done - we are almost there. See you soon.

No pain no gain as Year 9U2 battle injuries and still manage to complete Gaudi final pieces

Thanks to Millie Cotterill for taking these photos yesterday of her Year 9 group as they finished off their Antoni Gaudi mixed materials (level) pieces and Evaluations. Miss Johnson and Miss Townsend tell me that despite a broken wrist and a set of broken fingers in the group - they still managed to do the biz and get everything finished off to a good National Curriculum level and on time. Nice one Brandon and Callum - and Steven who finished first.

Even the Evaluation seems detailed,
well presented and 'in the style of''.

Wake up!

Broken wrist - but what has Ross got the thumbs up for?

When everything was finished our students then did the usual AFL (Assessment For Learning) exercise and went on to level their own work. Nice one. This will now be used as part of our tracking and reporting to parents.

Great to see so much mixed materials being used and coupled with all the pattern, flowing contours and use of colour I think the architect himself would have been proud of you.
